Where people swim in Baku

The beaches of Absheron are very varied: from quiet wild shores to landscaped zones with loungers and cafés. Nearest the city is Shikhov, but the cleanest and most popular beaches lie on the northern and eastern coast: Novkhani, Bilgah, Nardaran, Mardakan, Buzovna. Below are the main ones.

Where to go

The main beaches

Nearest the city

Shikhov

The long city beach nearest the centre, to the south-west of Baku. Easy to reach, but near an old industrial zone — the water is cleaner at the northern beaches.

A northern resort

Bilgah

A popular resort area in the north of Absheron: sandy beaches, hotels and clubs, including the Jumeirah Bilgah beach hotel.

Sand and a water park

Novkhani

Wide sandy public beaches in the north-west of the peninsula; nearby a well-known water park and recreation areas.

Beaches and dachas

Mardakan

A dacha village in the north-east with sandy beaches, and also an old castle and a famous arboretum.

The quiet east

Buzovna

An eastern coast with long sandy beaches and dachas — a calm spot for a family day out.

A resort shore

Nardaran

A northern village beside which sprawls the large Sea Breeze resort complex with its own beaches.

Northern sands

Pirshagi

A village in the north of Absheron with sandy beaches and recreation areas, popular with city folk in summer.

A beach club

Amburan

A well-known beach and club in the northern part of the peninsula with loungers, service and a view of the open sea.

East and dachas

Shuvelan

An eastern village with beaches and dachas; nearby are the famous sights of Absheron, the fire temple and the burning mountain.

There are far more beaches on Absheron: along the coast there are many small public and private stretches. Water cleanliness and service differ noticeably from place to place — the northern and eastern beaches are usually preferable.
